How does the laser work to remove pigmented lesions?
The laser delivers light in very short, high intensity pulses which pass
through the skin. The rapid absorption of light causes the pigment
molecule to destruct. The pigment molecule is then removed by the
bodys natural filtering system.
What type of pigmented lesions can be treated?
Pigmented lesions occur in approximately 15% of the population.
Lentigo (age or sun spots), café au lait birthmarks and certain
moles can be removed. The laser can treat these spots anywhere on
the body, more commonly on the face, hands, and chest.
What can I expect during the treatment?
The treatment causes immediate whitening of the pigmented area followed
by purple discoloration and mild crusting which may last 5 to 10 days.
For the majority of lesions only one treatment is required, however, depending
on the size, color, and depth more than one treatment may be required.
A burning sensation will be felt at the time of treatment and for 1 to
3 hours afterwards. The majority of clients can tolerate the treatment
without any anesthetic. An antibiotic ointment will be applied to
the treated areas.
How do I take care of it at home?
You may shower as usual just allowing the water to fall over the treated
area. No scrubbing or picking on the area. Apply an antibiotic
ointment for a few days. It is not necessary to cover, however,
you may if you want.
Are there any alternatives available?
Bleaching creams, Retin-A, sunblocks and liquid nitrogen are the traditional
treatments for brown skin disorders. The advantage of using laser
is the treatment is more precise, predictable, and uniform results can
be achieved in less time.
What are the side effects?
Very rarely pigmentation changes can occur either lightening or darkening
the skin. Rarely will it be persistent or permanent. There
is also a remote risk of scarring and texture changes.
