How does the laser work to remove tattoos?
The laser emits light in very short flashes called pulses. The laser
light is targeted to the specific pigment or color in the tattoo.
We offer no less than three different lasers so the tattoo removal can
be individually tailored to specific tattoo colors. Before laser
removal of tattoos was available, various other methods were tried such
as surgical removal, skin grafting, sanding, cauterization, dry ice, and
the application of various salts and chemicals to the skin. Most
of the above treatments often resulted in another deformity, scar or inadequate
pigment removal. Using a laser to remove tattoos surpasses any other
method available. The laser is used to effectively fade and remove
professional and amateur tattoos as well as ballpoint, India ink and lead
from pencils.
The Treatment
The procedure takes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes depending on the size
of the tattoo to be treated. The laser is traced over the tattoo.
The skin in the treatment site turns an ash color and within 10 minutes
becomes purple. It is not uncommon to have pinpoint bleeding associated
with the treatment. An antibacterial ointment and a dressing are
applied to the area. Within a couple of days, a crust will develop
that will last for approximately 5-10 days. Care must be taken not
to pick at the area.
Is the treatment painful?
The impact of the energy from the pulse of light is similar to the snap
of a thin rubber band against your skin. After the treatment a mild
burning sensation may persist in the treatment site for 1-3 hours.
The majority of clients can tolerate the procedure without anesthesia;
however, a topical or injectable anesthetic is available.
What type of care is required after the laser treatment?
Continue to apply an antibiotic ointment and non-stick Telfa dressing
over the area to prevent infection until the crust develops. Cleanse
the treated area daily by allowing shower water to flow over it and pat
it dry with a towel.
How many treatments will it take to remove my tattoo?
On average, amateur tattoos can take anywhere from 2 to 6 treatments and
professional tattoos 6 to 10 treatments. The number of treatments
depends on the amount, type and depth of the ink in the skin.
Will the tattoo completely disappear?
More than 95% fading of the tattoo is usually accomplished. Dark
inks and red inks fade the best and usually oranges, greens and purples
respond well, too. Yellow and white inks are the most difficult
to remove.
Are there any side effects?
Almost all tattoos can be removed without any scar or skin changes.
In rare cases, pigmentation changes, scarring and texture changes may
occur.
