These are challenging times. Over the past several weeks, the COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally shifted daily life as we know it. Thousands of Albertans will be infected by this dangerous virus, and many of these individuals will require hospitalization, ICU admissions, and sadly some will lose their lives. Our children are home from school, businesses are shuttered, many of our fellow Albertans have lost their jobs, and anxieties are at an all-time high in this province.
As difficult as these times may be, they have also brought out the best in us. Our hearts are warmed by countless stories of altruism and compassion, from people helping an elderly neighbour with their grocery shopping, to volunteers distributing masks to homeless shelters, to messages of love and support being left outside of long term care facilities affected by COVID-19. And of course, this pandemic has highlighted the extraordinary level of heroism and sacrifice of our frontline healthcare workers, putting themselves and their families in harm's way on a daily basis to help manage the wave of incoming patients affected by the COVID-19 virus.
At Rejuvenation Dermatology, we are resolute in our determination to continue to provide essential medical services throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Although we have made significant modifications to our daily workflow, both our Southwest Calgary location and our Windermere location in Edmonton remain open and available for each and every one of our existing patients who need us, and to our valued referral community. Some of the many modifications we have made to minimize the risk of exposure for both our patients and our staff include shuttering of our downtown Edmonton location to allow for more concentrated sterilization efforts to occur at our Windermere clinic; partial closedown of our waiting rooms to patients to minimize the risk of spread; use of texting system to allow patients to wait in their cars until their medical room has opened; a significant decrease in daily patient volumes; complete integration of our novel new virtual dermatology clinic to better and more safely assist all non-urgent referrals and follow up visits; markedly enhanced sterilization protocols; use of enhanced PPE throughout our facilities; and more.
To our referral community – we are continuing to accept any and all new referrals. Triaging of referrals to be seen either as a virtual consult or in-person consult (ie. for referral labelled urgent, possible or biopsy-confirmed skin cancers, drug reactions, vasculitis and more) is done upon receipt of each and every referral. To our patients – any condition you feel needs to be seen urgently, please get in touch with us via textline or on the phone at 403-286-6888 (Calgary) / 780-425-1212 (Edmonton) and we will triage your visit appropriately to either a timely virtual or in-person follow-up visit.
At Rejuvenation, we are committed to doing our part to maintaining access to critical health services throughout this pandemic, and to helping to alleviate pressure off of our urgent care and emergency departments wherever possible. Alberta – together we can overcome this hardship, and we are confident that we will not only do just that, but come out stronger and more united than ever.
