Turn Back the Hands of Time with Temple Filler

By: Dr. Paul Kuzel

As we age, our face loses volume in several key and characteristic places due to a complex interplay between our genetics, sun damage and various environmental factors. One such characteristic region of facial volume loss is in the temples, and it has become one of the most common areas which we treat with hyaluronic acid-based fillers, such as Juvederm Voluma.

An ideal of facial aesthetics dictates that if we trace a path from our suture line (the ridge separating our forehead bone from our temple which can be felt just above our lateral eyebrow) down to our jawbone, it should result in a gentle, smooth convex curve. If, at any point along this line we get a concavity or flattening of the curve, it could be the result of age-related facial volume loss correctable with hyaluronic acid fillers.

This holds true for the temple region as well. In some cases, patients come to me with a subtle flattening in the temples, and with as little as one vial of Juvederm filler, we’re able to restore more youthful fullness to this important aesthetic region. In other cases, the degree of temple hollowing is profound, and it might take as much as 4-6 vials of Juvederm Voluma spread out over multiple treatment sessions, to restore the degree of fullness and gentle sloping contour which the patient would have once had in the temples.

Apart from enhancing facial symmetry, restoring a youthful fullness to the temples and recreating the gentle sloping curvature to the lateral face which we as cosmetic injectors strive for, temple filler can help to restore support for and lift the lateral eyebrow, which in many cases can drop significantly the temples begin to lose volume. Combining temple filler with some expertly placed botox injections can work together to achieve a natural-looking, gentle lift and upward sloping of the eyebrows.

Fillers used in the temporal area are placed quite deep, in an area that doesn’t have a lot of dynamic muscle movement. As such, the results tend to be long-lasting, with my patients often seeing going two years or more before repeat treatment becomes necessary. Although this treatment is considered very safe, any cosmetic procedure performed using soft tissue fillers inherently comes with some risks. Intimate familiarity with facial anatomy is crucial, and as such, it is important that you seek out an experienced, qualified injector with specialized medical training.
